Well folks after a recent ruling that is against GA drawing out water from its own Lake Lanier it looks like all options are on the table. We can use this topic to aggregate info on our boundary dispute with TN. I think this would be some great stimulas to our local economy. I have two approaches to the solution of getting the water to ATL. One is to build two pump storage facilities. One on top of Sand and the other on top of Lookout Mountains. Why not generate electricity at the same time. The other would help relieve traffic in Chattanooga. Build a new interstate by-passing Chattanooga by means of a tunnel under Lookout Mountain and run the pipe up the center and then down I-75. Either way it will be a huge engineering and expensive project. I think ATL is about 600-700 feet higher in elevation than the TN River.

I don't like the idea of going thorough Lookout!

Q: With the possibility of Lake Lanier becoming off limits for a metro water source, what is happening with the effort to relocate the northern border of Georgia to include a portion of the Tennessee River as called for in the original survey documents?

Maybe not in our lifetime will we see the Tenn. River suppling Atlanta with water, but if that ever happens I just hope that they have to travel as little as possiable through Tenn. I'm sure they would charge a user fee to cross their property and make money off of it somehow. As far as moving the state lines that won't happen in anyones lifetime I think.

I've been involved in this project since Feb of 2005. Unless the governor takes the bull by the horns and goes to federal and ultimately the Supreme Court this isn't going to happen. I agree with Rex that this would be HUGE for Dade County. Not just in jobs but in prestige. The original proposal would have been to take 250 million gallons a day, about 1% of the flow of the river, from Nickajack lake. You'd never get it of course but do the math if you got just one penny a gallon for water. There are no other really good options for water for North Georgia. The tree huggers block most of the reservoirs that are proposed. There are no other sources of water so the only option is to completely halt development North of Macon. That's not a good option economically for the state.

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The Tennessee Valley Authority has no “philosophical position against” permitting intakes into the Tennessee River that would send water towards Atlanta, a representative told the Coosa-North Georgia Water Council this morning.

TVA Water Supply Program manager Michael Eiffe qualified his statement by explaining the federal utility could not allow water transfer permits that conflicted with navigation, flood control or hydroelectric generation and said Tennessee would likely have veto power over any permits.

“There’s a million issues,” Mr. Eiffe explained.

The TVA presentation on the status of various reservoirs started off the water council’s third meeting this morning. As soon as Mr. Eiffe opened the discussion, council members peppered him with questions about transferring water out of the Tennessee River.

Mr. Eiffe started by presenting hypothetical scenarios of pumping water to Birmingham, Ala., Tupelo, Miss. and Africa. Eventually, discussion came closer to home with council members asking about specifics of water in North Georgia.

Water council chairman John Bennett, of Rome; vice-chair David Ashburn, of Walker County, and council member Don Cope, of Dalton, all asked about the rules for Tennessee tributaries that originate in Georgia.

“Some of the water in the Tennessee River starts in Georgia,” Mr. Cope pointed out.

Mr. Eiffe said the water withdrawal permits would have to be approved only by the state where the water sits, not where it flows.

He said he knew of no request by Atlanta for a permit to withdraw water from the Tennessee.

But such a request, he added, could come at any time, or never at all.

For complete coverage, see Thursday's Times Free Press.

“It seems reasonable that that is an option that could be considered,” he said.

Note page 20 of that tapping the Tennessee white paper. I worked with those guys from February of 2005 till the day I left office. I still think it would be a great public works project especially if Dade could get about a penny a gallon for the water. 250 mgd. Do the math.

I think it's about like you said about LBTD here in Dade County. It won't happen in our lifetime but someday, somehow, even A blind hog will find an acorn (or at least in this case) some Revenue......
