Bonnie Renfro, president of the EDC, said available alcohol is an amenity widely available that most businesses expect when considering a new location. For manufacturing, she said, the top criteria are location, workforce and the cost of doing business. After that, incentives such as quality of life are often looked at, including alcohol.

“For service-based businesses or people moving here or recruiting people to move here, that’s when quality of life can be a more important part of the decision,” Renfro said. “The part of the economy that’s growing the fastest is service. We can’t afford not to go after that.”

When considering a move, she said, businesses “have the expectation of places to entertain clients and hold meetings. It’s just part of the business world to generate sales, create relationships. ... Those amenities are available at most other places. As a transition economy, (amenities such as alcohol sales) will become more important. We want to be part of that growth.”

George Gusler, who heads up the Chamber of Commerce, said he’s had contacts with several hotel and restaurant chains over the years.

“Each time (the lack of alcohol) has been a stumbling block,” he said. “Several major chains have turned Asheboro down. If alcohol is approved, we’ll get back in touch with them. Some (restaurants) are relatively large investments and employ 30 or 40, plus part-time workers.”

Quote:
We’re surrounded now (by cities with legal sales),” he said. “To compete we have to offer the same things as the others. To get people to stay in Asheboro we have to offer them what they want. We’ve got to get in the 21st century or we’re going to dry up.”

I think the issue of overindulge was discussed during the Republican meeting and someone was quite taken back because they took it as a FAT JOKE! I know that is a big problem I have is with eating and I don't have a problem admitting it, and that along with telling it like it is, sometimes is my biggest downfall....lol..lol...

Well, you know the strategy, always try to demonize those with whom you disagree (or in this case knew/know who you really are). Funny, we'll stand up and call someone immoral over their position related to alcohol sales, but simultaneously will do all we can to hide the immorality of those who we seek approval from... Oh, the power of the bully pulpit!!!

Book forthcoming: "The Power of Forgiveness / Lying Through Our Teeth / Randomly Demonizing Folks By Calling Them Judas". I know it's a long title, but bet it'd make a heck of a media tour. Maybe I could hire an ACLU attorney to promote my tour... :)

Oh yea, that's right!!! YOU were at the same Republican meeting during the discussion on putting the question on the ballot of asking the folks if they would want to vote on the issue and now that the City says they can pass the ordiance without a vote, some now say that is the REASON they are opposed to it. (Can't Vote on it) Might want to stick to what they know best when speaking on an issue instead of wanting the "Spotlight" on them. Because Bright lights will bring out the "Truth" and some in this county.... Well to quote a famous movie line... "You cant handle the truth"!

First let me look at two issuses.
Has any business wanting malt beverage had it's eye on Trenton? A couple years ago after Brock's burnt down Myself and Peter Cerveili traveled to Steverino's in Scottsboro. The owner was looking at Trenton. He also has a place in S. Pittsburg. In Scottsboro he only sells malt beverages and in S. Pittsburg he has a full bar. He wanted us to come to the Scottsboro restaraunt to see how it was. The lunch crowd seemed your typical lunch crowd. He realized that Dade County and the City does not allow package sales. He stated that he would need at least to be able to sell beer and wine. So yes we have seen the city not get business because of this.

The second rumor flying is that a restaruant can allow them to take it in to go cups. The legislation that is being misquoted is SB 55 http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2007_08/sum/sb55.htm that allows for a part of an unused bottle of wine to be transported. And yes Senator Mullis and Martin Scott did vote for this and the Governor did sign it(all republicans). What is not being said is that the restaurant is required to seal the bottle back and that the person carrying it has to transport the bottle in a locked glove box or trunk.

I had made the choice of not going to the City Meeting because I had already spoken and made my point. I did however watch the replay of the meeting last night to see that ALL 3 people who spoke against the ordinance was the same that spoke in the first meeting. While our local media would much like this to be the "Big Story" it is like I have said all along. Not much interest in this topic as in most here in Dade County. We sleep in Dade County but we live in Chatt. and most are fine with that. The problem is that it was said that the City was 85 thousand over budget? It all boils down to REVENUE! You can only cut back so much before getting into the services you provide...

Quote:
Restaurant Chain Location Specifications Restaurant chains often have location specifications spelled out for use by brokers and potential franchisees. This example shows the criteria that one casual-dining restaurant chain uses.

•Requires a metropolitan area with 50,000 population.
•Expects 20,000 cars per 24 hours on all streets of exposure; 24-hour traffic, at least four-lane highways.
•Must have residential back-up, plus motels, shopping centers, or office parks.
•Minimum frontage is 200 feet; approximately 45,000 square feet of land. If the restaurant is in a shopping center, a free-standing pad for a 5,000-square-foot building and adequate parking are necessary.
•Area must demonstrate growth and stability.
•Location must include easy access and visibility.
•All utilities must be available to the property, including sewer.

As you can see the Dade Area has the population. We have the interstate. The City has the sewer.
The Traffic count on 136 is real close to the number above.

Last night a call in poll was taken on the local tv show. The results were a very large percentage 59% (39)voting in favor of sales in restaurants 39% (26)against and 2%(1) didn't care either way. A total of 66 called in.

Also on Sept. 13th the LaFayette City Council Met. As to some people in the Trenton question that only 1 has applied. It seems the others are waiting so they don't have to pay the full permit fee for just three months.
Quote:
•Councilman Bill Craig says only one restaurant has applied for a license to sell beer and wine inside the city. Other restaurants interested in pouring won’t apply until 2011 because they don’t want to pay the full year price just to have it available during the last three months of this year. The one restaurant that did apply isn’t serving alcohol yet because they haven’t obtained a state license.
