PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - Paulding County is shutting down its animal shelter because it's infested with rodents.
Spoiler:
The shelter's staff said Friday that if they don't find homes for all the animals soon, they'll have to be put down.

The staff at the Paulding County animal shelter has two weeks to find all the pets homes.

"If we don't adopt them or find rescue for them our only other option is to euthanize them," said Tracy Thompson.

The shelter was packed with people Friday night.

"If I hadn't heard about the problems they were having I don't think I'd be adding to the family today," said Rhonda Sykes, who adopted a dog.

The shelter has to shut down for emergency renovations, because the shelter is infested with rats in the ceiling.

"It came on [kind of] quick. I think they just decided it was a health risk. There's some wiring damage up there," said Thompson.

Now, people like Darci Mackey are coming from far away to adopt.

"When I heard that they were closing this down, that dogs are going to be put down, I said, 'I've [got to] go get one.' So I drove an hour and a half from Fayetteville, Georgia," said Mackey.

The shelter lowered adoption fees to just $20 to try and get more pets out the door.

Officials said they recognize that low price could bring in some people with the wrong motives, but they said the alternative is to euthanize.
"I'm not a big fan of dropping fees but in these desperate times we're going to try it. We do have a paper trail, the dogs are microchipped, so we do have a connection animal if were to get into the wrong place hopefully we could find that out," said Thompson.

The work at the shelter is only expected to last a couple of weeks and that's when they'll start accepting animals again
