I have been doing some research on HB 277 which Mullis sponsored. This is the bill that we will vote on next July to determine if we should have a 1% sales tax for transportation. Here is a link to the bill: http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en- ... tion=26558 Here is a pdf of the bill: http://www.atlantaregionalroundtable.co ... lation.pdf. Why do you say we have a gun to our head? The bill states that if the round-table didn't reach a consensus on projects by October 15, 2011 then we would have to provide a 50% match to all State local road money (which hopefully they will. .)http://timesfreepress.com/news/2011/aug/19/north-georgia-panel-pushes-vote-on-tax-for/ That means LARP money which is slim already. This is how the county pays for most of it's road repaving and is funded by the gas tax you already pay. If are region does not pass the the tsplost in July then we get to pay 30%. So you either pass it or get ready to pay big time for road maintenance. Early on after this bill was signed into law I encouraged our local leaders to attend and even suggested they get on the Executive committee of the Round-table. Ted did this and this is probably why we have a new interstate exit listed as a project. You can see the peanlties on pages 21-24 on the above pdf link. Here is a page I found that is against the tax. http://tsplost.wordpress.com/legislation/ Politifact calls this tax the biggest tax hike in Georgia history. http://www.politifact.com/georgia/state ... c-wrong-r/ (Remember this is Mullis's bill.) Here is Dalton's Mayor David Pennington speaking out against this tax. I heard this on our local radio station yesterday.
Here is Mullis on the bill. http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politic ... 81503.html Here is a good article our friends over a The LaFayette Underground did a while back. http://www.cityoflafayettega.com/2010/1 ... tax-creep/ Here is Mullis's press statement on the bill. http://senatepress.net/mullis-georgia%E ... iumph.html Did you notice it doesn't say anything about the penalties? Here is the only good thing. Ted said they could probably lower the millage rate by half a mil if this passed. I would say if this passed our roads will be in tip top shape if the money is used correctly. We would also have a interstate exit. The tax last for 10 years. If it doesn't pass we can't vote on it for 24 months. So you are going to get 2 years of penalties. Your thoughts?

Most folks of Dade County haven't even heard the term TSPLOST yet.... But they will! It always amazes me that folks will vote themselves a TAX but fight against someone raising taxes. Just seems kinda strange to me. But wouldn't that new exit bring more drunks through this county?????? lol...lol...lol...

Looking at it now in light of the situation of the country one has to wonder "Do we REALLY need an another exit" We can't even do anything about the conjestion of Trenton when School is in session. Its not that new industry's are knocking the door down to move here. We could not even get a company making lug nuts for VW ( Not Really just an example)
Road project tax heads to voters By Mariann Martin Friday, September 30, 2011 CALHOUN, Ga. -- More than $1.1 billion in transportation projects for Northwest Georgia heads to voters for their approval after a unanimous vote Thursday by members of a 15-county Northwest Georgia roundtable.
Voters will decide in July whether to approve a 1 percent special local option sales tax for 10 years to pay for projects that include an interstate interchange, road widening, sidewalk improvements and airport hangars. The money will be split, with 75 percent devoted to projects and 25 percent that can be used for discretionary spending.
"This is led by local elected officials and is the perfect way to do these kinds of revenue enhancements," said state Sen. Jeff Mullis, R-Chickamauga, who attended Thursday's meeting of the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission roundtable at the Calhoun Convention Center. Mullis is chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.
State legislators passed a law this spring that divides Georgia into transportation regions. If voters approve the tax, the money will be divided among counties using a formula to calculate population and expected revenue, although some counties will raise more in tax dollars than they will receive in project spending.
If residents in a region don't vote on the tax in July or don't pass it, the region will receive less matching money from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Tea party and other groups across Georgia oppose the tax and have vowed to defeat it.
But area elected officials, including Mullis, have said that having local lawmakers compile the projects list provides local input and oversight.
"I plan to promote it because I believe in it," Mullis said. "All those extremists that don't like it can come and get me."
State lawmakers had considered moving the vote from July to November, when more people will be voting in general elections, but could not get support for the change during an August special session of the Legislature.
Mullis said he does not know of any plans to bring up the issue during the regular session next spring. He said he supports moving the date, but he's not sure enough other lawmakers want to make the change.
Whitfield County Commission Chairman Mike Babb and Dade County Executive Ted Rumley also voiced support for the projects list.
"I hate the word 'tax,' but I think it's as fair a tax as it can be," Rumley said.
Let us not forget Mullis has been wanting this regional tax for a long time.

Well after traveling down I-75 to Calhoun the past couple of days one has to wonder is “ Maglev” leaving all those “Mullis Mountains” and “Maglev Valleys” in all lanes of the interstate for a reason. For those of you who don’t know what a “Mullis Mountain” is it is that huge hump of asphalt that rise up like a mountain in the middle of a lane that have scrape marks where cars have bottomed out and scraped of the top of them. Kind of like a mountain to that has been strip mined. The “Maglev Valleys” are those huge voids of asphalt where when you run over them at interstate speeds your tires are suspended in the air till they hit the “Mullis Mountain” on the other side (You Know like the Maglev Train is suspended in mid air). I guess Maglev wants the Tax so he can give us better demonstrations on how the maglev train will work by making more “Mullis Mountains” and “Maglev Valleys” on the Interstates.

Mullis has put himself out there now for all of North Ga. to see what he is all about. He wants YOU to vote to raise YOUR taxes. Kinda like the bully in the back row of school putting it up to another kid to take the fall for doing wrong. You should be able to tell by now that adding taxes is the only way to get anything done in this country anymore. I really find the project that Dade County has selected funny because most of my life I have "Heard" of this exit project while the cost of it has risen triple or more.
