The number of “dry” counties and towns is shrinking at a rapid clip
WINONA, Texas — Across the country, many localities still forbid the sale of some or all types of liquor, but that has been changing recently, USA Today reports. Places like Winona, Texas, have begun legalizing alcohol sales in order to revitalize dying communities and to increase tax revenues.
When Prohibition banned the sale, production and consumption of alcohol in 1920, the entire United States became a dry country. In 1933, when Prohibition was repealed, states were able to regulate alcohol how they saw fight. The result was a mismatch of state and county or town laws and regulations.
Now, one in nine counties are “dry,” but that number has been shrinking lately. During the past eight years, more than a dozen states have reversed the ban on selling alcohol in Sundays.
Winona held a referendum last November to vote on changing from dry to wet. Winona Mayor Rusty Smith said, “It almost seems like we’re behind the times [because we were dry].” The wets prevailed by a slim margin and Winona residents can now purchase alcohol within the city limits.
“I’ve never understood why you have to leave the county to buy beer to enjoy in the privacy of your own home,” said Smith. Since the vote, four liquor stores have come to town with more in the planning stages. The town’s sales tax revenue jumped from around $2,200 a month to $11,000 in May.
Rather than a tax increase that is coming maybe it is time to stop buying in tTiftonia, and Dekalb?

This keeps coming up but it's a pipe dream. You'll get pictures of Sasquatch having lunch with the Dade County Sheriff before LBD or Sunday sales pass in Dade County.

You might be right there Wreck but it's true what they say about shopping in Chatt....
She’s expecting rather more locks to hit the floor of the fellowship hall this time around as news of the giveaway gets out and attendance swells. “We’re shooting to supply school supplies for 500 children this year,” said Ms. Hagler. “Last year we supplied around 350, so we’re just assuming it’s going to grow.”
The supplies, which include paper, crayons and glue sticks as well as the backpacks to carry them in, are donated not by retailers but by the Church of God’s 40 to 50 members, and that’s why Chris Hagler begins each church service by announcing where the best sales are this week.
The congregation has been buying school supplies since they went on sale after classes began last year, said Ms. Hagler.“We go and we clear out stores,” she said. “We found some items on sale this past week at Staples for a penny.”
“There’s a Walgreen’s I pass on the way to work, so whatever they’ve got on sale, I stop and purchase that,” said Nancy Belk. “This afternoon I’ll hit Wal-Mart, and there’s no telling what I’ll find there.”
Let's just keep out stuff like Resturants and keep spending money in Chatt. and watch our taxes rise because Revenue needs to come from somewhere...

The thing is... They used to say the same thing about Ft. Payne also. Now look at them with all the Resturants and Now they even have a new Exit to help their Industril Park. I guess when the folks of Dade County really start to pay for services with their taxes they would have wished they had more money for the "Plate" at Church! Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees, but when you won't admit you are lost in the forest then you are really in trouble....

I think it would pass on a presidental election in Nov. I think they should put it on their just to see. If they want a petition with 500 signatures then I will get it. They don't have to say they support it or not but they are just putting it on for the people to decide. If it fails then we could shut up about it for a couple of years. I have been meaning to look into the law. There may already be a provision that if a pettition with so many is presented they have to put it on. If not maybe we could get that passed in the legislature next year and then follow up the year later.
Off Topic I would also like to see an additional penny tax added to wine to pay for a State Enologist. A lot of states do this. Texas has grown to over 250 after this went into effect. They have it in a lot of other states also.
