Score one for the teachers. HB 977 does not allow the local school board to use state money to give superintendants and administrators any raises in any year they give furloghs. Could you even think a board would try such a thing? It has a very long list of what employees are considered for furloughs. The bill will require the local board to provide notice and a hearing if local or private funds to be used for such salary increases. The author of the bill Representative Ed Rynders said If you’re gonna use your local funds all we ask is that you have a public hearing so the public can know. Good government, good transparency
Here is the summary:
Quote:
A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Part 6 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to employment under the "Quality Basic Education Act"; so as to prohibit the use of state funds to provide a salary increase for the local school superintendent or administrators during a school year in which a local board of education furloughs teachers, paraprofessionals, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, support staff, or other nonadministrative positions; to require the local board to provide notice and a hearing if local or private funds are intended to be used for such salary increases; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

And yes Rep. Martin Scott voted for this.

State step salary increases are not included with this bill. This bill only makes sense.

Funny how Mullis did not vote for this one. With furloughs planned for next year looks like no raises for (as we used to say in the military) office pukes. I would hope in a year they plan on raising my taxes that there would be no raises for coaches(i think that is all we hire now) teachers.
