ATLANTA —

Georgia Power wants to raise electricity bills by 10 percent for its residential customers as it deals with the recession and the cost of new power plants. The Southern Co.-subsidiary filed the proposal Thursday with regulators at the Public Service Commission, which must approve the plan before it could take effect. The utility firm estimates that a typical residential customer could see his bill go up by nearly $11 a month starting next January if the system is approved. Georgia Power could also seek additional increases in the coming year to pay for the finance costs of expanding a nuclear power plant. The commission plans a December vote on the new utility rates.

The future raise you can thank Senator Jeff Mullis for voting for SB 31 back in 2009.
