Rumors of panther or cougar spark search in Rome for large, black cat

Quote:
by John Bailey
Missing pets and several reported sightings of a large, black panther-sized cat since last fall have led a group of citizens to hire a private group of trackers to try and capture the elusive animal — if it exists.

Martin Duke, a wildlife abatement specialist with Deer Proof Inc., said the sightings have ranged from the Freeman Ferry Road area to an area near the Maplewood East neighborhood.

Five sightings since Thanksgiving led a “consortium of citizens” from the neighborhood off Valley Brook Drive to enlist the company’s services in capturing the elusive feline.

The likeliest of the possibilities is the cat — if it does exist — was a pet illegally raised that escaped or was let go, Duke said. Another possibility is the cat is an endangered Florida panther that has made its way into the area.

“There is a 10-percent chance the animal may be a Florida panther,” he said. “And if it is, it’s a protected, endangered species.”....................................

This photo was taken by Westra of what he says is a mountain lion and her cubs.

ROSSVILLE, WALKER COUNTY (WRCB) - In Rossville, a mountain lion and her cubs are on the loose and folks are being told to stay inside at night.

Acting on a tip, Channel 3 went to Rossville Estates Mobile Home Park Friday afternoon after receiving a cell phone picture from the security officer.

The picture quality isn't great, but you can certainly tell it's a wild cat.

Security Guard Casey Westra says the mother and cubs were sleeping on an outside sofa last night and he went door to door.

"I went to all the neighbors and told them especially the ones that had outdoor dogs and stuff, and told them," Westra said.

Westra said the cat is probably more afraid of people than vice versa. However, since she does have cubs she could jump into protective mode at any minute.

I live in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, not far from Dade County, and I have seen a large, dark panther in our neighborhood. I will never forget when, where, or how it happened. I was walking my dogs and my younger, fearless warrior's hair went up, a sight I had never seen. I looked down the road and then the huge cat leaped across ~ just touching the middle once. It was 9:20 on Sunday, October 25, 2009, and I never even thought about a panther before that night. I was in total shock, and our walk quickly become a quick retreat back into the house instead.
Still shaking hours later, previous events starting making sense, and I had further confirmation dangerous wild animals among us were my new reality. I would never feel the same about walking at night again, something I had been doing at all hours with younger dog until this night. Just the night before, a car had gone back and forth down the same quiet street repeatedly. The dogs who used to spend the night outside on our deck were suddenly terrified of being left alone and couldn't get in quickly enough.... The annoying crying baby I kept hearing wasn't a child at all....
