TRENTON, Ga. — Do you, or someone you know, have a green thumb in the garden?
If so, the Dade County Chamber of Commerce and the Trenton Downtown Development Authority want you.
A pilot farmers market will be held at the Veterans Park across from the courthouse beginning Saturday and continuing every Saturday — excluding Sept. 2 and Oct. 4 due to other commitments — through October.
Farmers are being sought from Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Hamilton and Marion counties to fill 20 slots open for the first market, organizers said.
Similar markets have opened “all over the country where people are looking for clean and sustainable food,” according to market manager John Shober.
Homegrown crafts also will be accepted, from flower arrangements and grapevine wreaths to canes and birdhouse gourds, according to Shober.
Secondhand and flea market-type items are not allowed. All foods must be grown and produced locally.
The economic impact could be impressive, Shober said.
“One study shows if every Georgia family spent only $10 a week on fresh produce, it would have a statewide impact of almost $2 billion,” he said.
Lookout Mountain residents Gilbert and Sarah Moore agree. The couple plan to attend the new Trenton Farmers market, bringing eggplant, cherry tomatoes, okra and peas.
“It’s a trend to go back to eating healthy and eating fresh produce,” said Sarah Moore.
They also hope to see a positive economic impact, pointing out they “raised six kids” and hired “neighborhood teenagers” on their farm.
“We paid them and could see how it was helping them as helping us,” she said. “It’s all family and community.”
The fee for vendors is $5 per week, according to the Development Authority. If the pilot market is successful, supporters hope to grow the venture into a membership organization.

I wish this Project the best of luck. But having had a business in Trenton, I know that Saturday is the worst for Traffic and sales. Seems everone knows that Chatt. has more to offer and the only traffic in Trenton is getting on at the I-59 interchange headed either South or North.

I also wish this project well...I just wish they had started earlier in the season. Lot of crops are winding down now and while the selection is goo it is not as good as it would have been a month and half ago. Sat markets are ok but the best market days are Tue and Fridays that way you get all the people wo work in the city and your base of buyers are greater then... However what do I know I am just a dumb old country boy...

I stopped by as they were packing up. What I heard was that a farmer came from Rhea county with gorgeous vegtables. Jon Shober and Sara Moore also set up. All sold out and were very exited about the 200-300 person turnout. I was shell shocked when I heard the numbers but was pleasently exited.

Celebrating welfare. Of course I guess that by giving $30 of taxpayer money to WIC recipients to buy produce is better than giving them money to be spent on ring-dings at Bi-Lo. Think the recipients of the WIC money don't have families that could be feeding them?
If you can't afford to raise children don't have them. Yes, I'm aware that it is politically incorrect to point this out but we need to make it unacceptable to be on welfare again. We've made it too easy and acceptable to be a drain on society.

I went to the farmers market yesterday. I bought some grass fed beef from Mike North & Jon Shober. It made great hamburgers. I then bought a big picknic size basket of okra from a farmer from Rhea County for $12. I saw someone there selling grapes and yes the kind you make wine from. It looked like about 10-15 vendors. With vendors small sizes to big ones set up. we were there about 11:30 and there seem to be a steady flow of people. I hope it continues to be a success. This is something good going on in Dade so please come out and buy some vegies.
