Today on Peach Pundit. CNN political contributor and Editor for RedState.com call Jeff Mullis a turncoat Republican for siding with Democrats to restore Casey Cagle's power in the Senate. Part of the deal was to allow democrats to become head of three committee that would allow democrat favoring districts when redistricting comes into play. Well isn't this special. Here are the highlights. http://www.peachpundit.com/2011/03/31/9 ... /#comments 14 Georgia Republicans Join The Democrats In A Coup
Quote:
Casey Cagle has now allied himself with the Democrats in the Georgia State Senate. Fourteen Republicans in the State Senate joined the Democrats in a coup against the present leadership.
Nine of the Republican turncoats are Jim Butterworth, Bill Hamerick, Frank Ginn, Steve Gooch, Butch Miller, Jeff Mullis, Jack Murphy, David Shafer, and Renne Untermann.
The interesting part – which has gone unreported and explains why this has turned into such a big deal – came out in a subsequent caucus meeting, according to several sources. Apparently Cagle had cut a deal with Democrats to help him restore his power. In exchange for their votes, he would put Democrats in charge of three committees and ensure that four Republican-leaning districts are redrawn to favor Democrats. Those districts are represented by Cowsert and Sens. Johnny Grant of Milledgeville, John Bulloch of Ochlocknee in southwest Georgia and Fran Millar of Atlanta. Cagle spokesman Ben Fry called the preceding paragraph “completely inaccurate,” but it was confirmed by other Gold Dome insiders who asked that their names be kept out because they have friends on both sides.
The engrossment motion failed 23-19. Click here for the roll call. The GOP senators who declined to vote are the key to understanding it.
SR 526 now moves to the Senate Rules Committee, which must immediately take up the measure upon adjournment today. The floor fight would come tomorrow.
