Once again is this really a good financial doing in the light of the present economy? What will it really do for the community that is THAT important? Isnt there some kind of hall over by the ball fields that serves this kind of purpose?
>>The building will also be using animal control funds to support the animal control functions of the city by providing a small area where animal adoptions can take place.<<
Why even bother with this when you don't have an animal control officer OR a decent holding facility? Sounds kind of like a facade type thing to 'appease' those who want a shelter -- without really having to spend much on it and it just makes the justification of the whole 'civic center' complex a better sell.
I mean I could be wrong, and I often am just ask those who live with me!

sbcorgi, the City Of Trenton is a wonderful place. It has a great park and alot of good things about it. The thing that bothers me the most about this issue (or project) is the way it's been handled. First of all, there was a meeting over 6 years ago about what was needed in the City. A Community Center was on the list. The project "Heads" were not even there nor have they been at any meeting about what the Citizens of Trenton needs or wants. I worked with the then Mayor on alot of projects to make Trenton "Your City for Family Living". But then when the S.P.L.O.S.T. passed, the agendas started. The City of Trenton has about 2 million dollars to "PLAY WITH" and those who wanted to play are doing so. I am not agin this project but how it has been "played" is all wrong and those who pay attention know so. The people involved in this project have no thoughts about the citzens of Trenton , just the agenda of the animal people.
The city does have an animal control officer but the holding facility isn't up to par and you are right about trying to appease those who want a shelter.

Anyone who knows about politics in Dade County (like Wreck or Chef) knows that the School Board and the City can get away with blowing money but the County will have to walk through fire to get anything bought. I don't know why this is but it's a known fact that when the S.P.L.O.S.T. passed, that some took that as a way to get their "PET PROJECT" done. They knew the little money that the County had for them wasn't enough or even not gonna get that now, but the City Bonded this money and have it to "play with" now. Such a shame that the City lost a Mayor that did hold accountability. I know that this was on a "List" of things to look at, but now that he's no longer there and the "Good Ole Boys" are playing with the money. Nothing will be said and no accoutability will be held.
Although I am NOT a resident in the City of Trenton, I tried to hold myself accoutable to it's taxpayers and tried to help make it a better place for all of Dade County to be proud of. Once I seen where the agenda was headed, and to keep down the fuss, I had to leave. I have said many times.. "It's hard enough to fight for something, but it's even harder to try to keep it going"......

I went by the site this morning to discover that the ground had been torn up and Limestone Rock was dug up. (musta not have hired the local core sample expert) on this project. I asked the local media expert (so they think) that if a vote had been taken to spend the money to start construction. Now it could have been a City Worker just doing a little checking themselves on Rock but still I had to laugh at the fact. Funny how you can build in some place in Dade County but not others that lie on the same limestone line as the Old Ind. Park, the New Ind. Park and the City Civic Center... Oh it's Mayberry alright!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand a lot about this project. They act like we have all these art and cultural shows to put on stage or in a gallery. I think we need decent animal facilities, but why waste space that could be used for something worthwhile, like a career center with computers available just for job searches and information on Georgia Work Ready. Also, I really think a gym would have been more appropriate than a civic center. A gym could still have been used for community meetings, etc., but would have the added benefit of giving the rec league another space to practice in - not to mention a place for anyone who wants to play basketball or dodge ball or whatever, especially since you have to have at least 1 million in liability insurance and a faculty representative to use school facilities. I don't know...I just think they could have found something better to do with the money. Besides - why hasn't any of this been discussed at the city commission meetings until just recently when the architectural drawings were complete? I would have thought they would have been talking about this for awhile before going ahead with it.

As is sat in a DDA meeting yesterday and listen to a group of people talk about how wonderful this new building was, I began to wonder why it was so important that it be built at this time. I already knew the answer but I had to wonder how it was so easy for people to want to be a part of spending a million dollars of taxpayer money for something that will have little effect in Trenton. I understand that you need things for people to feel like their money is being spent on what is needed but at this time I had to ask why it was so important and what function of the DDA was to promote the City into spending that much money on a building.
But as I have said there will be little if any thing said about this building and the money spent to build it.

That is one of the things I have a problem with. I stated in last evenings meeting that it was an agenda of a certain board member and only that made it a function of the DDA. The adoption center will be named after the board member and that is why they needed support of the DDA to help promote the building.
The other problem is that they try to say that the Parks and Rec. is in control of the project when in fact it is being controlled by one person and their agenda. Ronnie Page will put the building out for bid and not sure why that is. Chuck Cannon don't speak or is not even at the City Commission meetings that much to even be held accoutabale for any money spent.

My question is where is everyone going to park? The City has some pretty strict parking laws based on building use and square footage? I wouldn't think you could count the existing parking lot that gets full when the ball fields are being used and the swimming pool is running. The paper said it could hold a play of around 300 people. Where are you going to put 150 cars?

Maybe they are just expecting those kinds of crowds from the schools? You know with how ever many they can get into a bus -- or perhaps they will have the "Old" industrial park become the parking lot and then they can 'bus' everyone to the civic center. Like they do for the Country Fair at Chester Frost park!
